Challenge
How do you feel when you walk through your space? Do you feel like you’re at home, or as if you’re just passing through? Does your environment resonate with your dreams, goals and core values? I want all of my clients to live and work in a surrounding that revitalizes them on a daily basis. My design practice needs to be able to create spaces that become a canvas on which they can paint physical, mental and emotional affirmations.
My clients, an academy award nominated producer, his beautiful, artistic wife and their five sons, desired a restorative environment that would bring them back into balance. This was a special project for me as I wanted to design an environment that would nurture them and encourage a harmonious family life.
I saw right away that nature and connecting to something bigger than themselves were as much a part of their spiritual path as it was intrinsic to their creative journey as artists. However, the space was absent of the soulful qualities that they possessed. It needed to reflect their fantastic personal style as well as adding a layer of functionality that would allow them to feel less overwhelmed.
Having a home filled with five boys, each with their own personality and desires with two creative parents can always be a challenge to keep the space organized without things get piled up. Somewhere in that space, you can easily loose the ability to feel rested and be able to rejuvenate. I needed to design something gorgeous, trigger them to calm their over stimulated minds and bring out the warm, homey feel in the space while maintaining a high level of creativity.
Solution
The house had an inherent old world style that fit with my client’s whimsical personality. Loving the design with nature conceptual idea, I sketched out designs for the furniture and custom mural that would represent my modernized version of nature. The Italian lamps became mushrooms in my imagination. I customized a live edge cocktail table as the symbol of a giant tree that would anchor the living room, but bleached it over and over again to get the perfect color that would just melt into our color story.
Using the view of the real sky as feature to the room that was highlighted by the steel framed leaded windows, I paid attention to the colors in the room that would play well with the outdoor environment. Each piece found for the room deeply resonated with them on a visceral level, including the custom atmospheric mural that brought the concept together.
To established a sense of family togetherness while still expressing their dynamic creativity as a couple I paid special attention to furniture and seating configurations that encourage communication, unity, and warmth; to using art and family photographs to help their children establish and maintain a sense of identity.
The next layer was to implement an organized system where each kid (and parent!) had a place to land their clutter as they entered the space. We even customized a “scooter garage” into the banquette for the younger boys to roll their scooters in after use, which immediately neatened up the foyer.
After a big purge of donated goods sent to habitat for humanity, I created a new system of organization that would eradicate the clutter which can do a number on a parents state of being. Using a lot of creativity, feng shui and organizational skills stylish vessels were implemented throughout the house that would hold everything you can think of to alleviate piles that can easily accumulate in a household of seven.
The entry/mud room was large enough to add five rattan lidded baskets (one for each son), a chest for dad and a storage bench for mom. I added a variety of cabinet pulls to the wall (not shown) in a pattern like the milky way that allowed each of them to hang their keys, hats, scarves, etc as they come in….but doing it in a way that would always look effortless and stylish.
The end result is a home that makes them happy and inspired with places for each of them to feel like an individual (which we all need to feel in a big or small family). I am grateful to have such wonderful clients that are as inspirational to me.
