PATIO DESIGN TIPS: 5 EASY WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PATIO
Patio design tips that add a special dash of feel good summer fun. We can’t get enough of the great outdoors so here are a few ways to make yours the best it can be.
Decorate with pieces that show off your personality. Pick a bold color, pattern or bring in unexpected items such as outdoor rugs and stacked pillows for people to sit on the floor. Here, my client’s favorite color, pink, was incorporated throughout the patio with a mix of vibrant pink flowering plants. We added a nod to her fun side with the colorful string lights. Check out our tips on color to see the psychological effects they have on your mood.
Candles, water fountains, fire pits, string lights or any type of decorative lighting such as sconces, floor globes or chandeliers are classics for a reason. Patio design tips begin with ambiance and they bring a ton of it. Check out our feng shui tips to see examples of how to balance these types of design elements perfectly.
Patio design tips should always include comfort and comfort means avoiding squinting or getting over heated because of the sun. Create shade somewhere where there is seating, but leave some areas open to the stars for night time magic. Here we used a restoration hardware day bed with curtains that allowed her full privacy and shade.
If you are lucky enough to have a great view, plan your seating accordingly to enjoy the most of it. You can even maximize your beautiful scenery by framing them with a design feature. For those of you who live in Los Angeles, the way architect Richard Meier framed the sky at the Getty Museum (Getty Center) is a wonderful example of using design as a frame for the view beyond your structure. If you are looking over something that you would rather conceal, try to block out parking lots or other less than fabulous views with plants but allow an opening at level where you see only the sky or conceal unsightly views completely with a wall of plants, potted trees, or outdoor curtains. Remember that your outdoor patio becomes a beautiful view from the inside too, so pay attention to how you take it in from your interior living space.
Vibrant warm colors such as reds or orange create a more lush feel when paired with green plants and colorful flowers. Adding a black and white pattern can add a bit of edge to the mix or keep it classic as we did here.
